Hiking the San Diego coast: four 3-bedroom homes

Four of the San Diego homes we manage have three bedrooms, and any of them works as a base for a trip built around trails and tide pools: Hot Tub|Outdoor Lounge|Queen Beds|Chef's Kitchen, Vintage Vibes|King Bed|Big Screen|Backyard & Bunks, King Bed|Chef's Kitchen|2-Car Garage|1650 Sq Ft, and Golden Hour Overlook | Spa | In-Law Suite | Grill. Three are single-family houses, one is a townhome, and they sleep between seven and nine. The thing that separates them for a hiking trip isn't square footage. It's where you can put the car, where the wet gear goes, and whether there's a hot tub waiting at the end of the day.
The coast runs north to south, and so should your week
San Diego's walkable coastline sits at two ends of the same shoreline, and nobody does both well in a single morning. At the north end, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve sits on North Torrey Pines Road between La Jolla and Del Mar, reached from the 5 by exiting at Carmel Valley Road and driving west about a mile and a half to the coast highway. At the south end, Point Loma holds Sunset Cliffs Natural Park and Cabrillo National Monument, both off Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Cabrillo Memorial Drive respectively, with Interstate 8 running west to the end as the way in. Cabrillo to Sunset Cliffs is roughly five miles of coast, which gives you a sense of how compact that southern cluster is.
Torrey Pines rewards a plan. Guy Fleming is a level three-quarter-mile loop through the pines with ocean vistas and sandstone, the one to do if someone in the group is not in the mood for a climb. Razor Point runs about the same distance out to dramatic views over the gorge and badlands, splitting off the Beach Trail a couple of hundred yards below the restroom trailhead. Broken Hill is the long one, through chaparral with little shade, and both forks drop you to the beach in a bit over a mile.
Parking is the only genuinely annoying part. Driving into the state park costs money; walking in is free, which is why most people leave the car along Highway 101 and hike up. The extension trails on the inland side have free street parking and far fewer people: Mar Scenic follows a seasonal creek, DAR looks across the marsh, Margaret Fleming cuts through coastal sage scrub, Red Ridge loops out to lagoon views. None is longer than three-quarters of a mile, and on a Saturday in spring they are worth more than the main reserve.
If you want distance, the La Jolla Shores to Torrey Pines walk runs about five miles one way along the sand. Leave a car at Torrey Pines State Beach, or get a ride back to the one at La Jolla. The beach itself runs about four and a half miles from Del Mar past Los Peñasquitos Lagoon to the foot of the mesa, and connects to the reserve by coastal trail.
Point Loma is the shorter, stranger day. The Sunset Cliffs Trail is a bit over two miles along the bluff edge, and the park's hillside section connects up to the Point Loma Ecological Reserve. At Cabrillo, the Bayside Trail drops along the eastern tip past old military buildings, with the lighthouse and tide pools at the end. Mount Soledad, above La Jolla, has a parking lot at the top and a full circle of view: downtown, Mission Bay, Scripps Pier, Torrey Pines in the distance. It takes ten minutes and is the best thing you can do with a bad weather window.
The four three-bedroom houses, and what each is actually like
Here is the shape of the decision:
- Hot Tub|Outdoor Lounge|Queen Beds|Chef's Kitchen — single-family, three queen beds, two full baths, sleeps seven with the sofa. Hot tub, gas fire pit, and a covered patio with dining, a TV and lounge seating. Free street parking.
- Vintage Vibes|King Bed|Big Screen|Backyard & Bunks — 1,658 square feet of 1960s house on a 10,200 square foot lot, sleeps nine. A king, a queen, four twin bunks and a sofa. Street parking, big backyard, quiet residential street.
- King Bed|Chef's Kitchen|2-Car Garage|1650 Sq Ft — a 2022-built townhome in Golden Hill, 1,648 square feet, a king and two queens, three and a half baths, sleeps seven. Attached two-car garage. Walking distance to Balboa Park.
- Golden Hour Overlook | Spa | In-Law Suite | Grill — single-level, 1,100-plus square feet, two queens and a full bed in a separate in-law suite behind the main house, plus two couches; sleeps eight. Hot tub, fire pit with wraparound seating, outdoor dining under heaters, EV charging.
The townhome in Golden Hill solves a problem the others don't. Three and a half bathrooms for seven people means nobody waits while someone else rinses sand off, and the attached garage is the only enclosed, off-street parking of the four. If you are arriving with bikes, boards, or a rental you'd rather not leave on the street overnight, that garage is the deciding factor. It sits near downtown with Balboa Park a short walk away, which also makes it the one that works if half your group wants museums while the other half drives to Point Loma.
Vintage Vibes is the one to look at if your nine includes children. Four twin bunks is an unusual configuration in a three-bedroom house, and it means a family group doesn't have to put teenagers on a pull-out. The lot is enormous by San Diego standards, the house has the big windows and original detailing that 1960s builders got right, and the street is quiet. Parking is on the street, so plan accordingly if you're running two cars.
Golden Hour Overlook earns its name after a day on the cliffs. The backyard has a hot tub, a fire pit with seating all the way around, and outdoor dining with overhead heaters, which matters more than people expect: coastal evenings here turn cool fast once the sun drops. The in-law suite behind the main house has its own entrance, so whoever is driving to Torrey Pines for sunrise can leave without waking anybody. One thing to know before you book: the main house uses a portable AC unit rather than central air, and the in-law suite has circulation fans. Most older homes near the coast here were built without it, and the climate usually makes it a non-issue, but if you're coming from somewhere central air is standard, decide now rather than in August.
Hot Tub|Outdoor Lounge is the most evenly built of the four for a group of adults. Three queen rooms means no one draws the short straw, and the covered patio with its TV and lounge seating is genuinely usable in the evening whatever the marine layer is doing. There's a gas fire pit and the kitchen is properly stocked. It's the smallest footprint of the four, so seven is a real seven rather than a theoretical one.
If ten of you are coming, don't force it into three bedrooms
The Coastal Casa | Spa, Hoops & Garden Oasis has four bedrooms, not three, so it's outside the brief. It's worth knowing about anyway. Three baths, sleeps ten, two separate living rooms, and a fenced backyard with mature palms, fruit trees and an organic garden. There's a seven-person hot tub, a propane grill with fuel supplied, a half court for basketball and a horseshoe pit. The reverse osmosis tap is a small thing that matters when you're filling bottles for a group every morning before a hike. Driveway and street parking, keyless entry, fiber wifi.
Two living rooms is the real argument for it over any three-bedroom house. On a trip where some people hike at seven and others surface at ten, having two places to sit changes the texture of the morning.
Cooking, laundry, and the parts of a hiking trip nobody plans for
A coastal trip generates laundry at a rate a beach holiday doesn't: sandy shorts, salt-stiff towels, socks from the Broken Hill Trail. All four three-bedroom homes have a washer and dryer on site. All four have full kitchens, and three of them (the two chef's kitchens and Vintage Vibes) come stocked with cookware, dishes, a coffee maker and the basics, which is what you want when you're out the door before anything opens.
On the hot tub question: two of the four have one, Hot Tub|Outdoor Lounge and Golden Hour Overlook. After a day on the Bayside Trail or five miles of sand from La Jolla Shores, that is not a luxury item, it's physiotherapy.
Check-in is 4 pm across the board. We'll take earlier when the cleaning schedule allows, charged by the hour, but it depends on when the previous guests leave and we confirm it by message rather than promising it at booking. If you're flying in and want to get to the coast the same afternoon, message us and we'll look at the day.
What to settle before you book
Bedroom counts and layouts are listed above as our inventory records them, but confirm dates with us directly rather than assuming a house is free: these are the four three-bedroom homes we manage in San Diego, not a guarantee that all four are open on your week.
Two policy points that vary by house and trip people get wrong. Pets: policies differ property to property, and some of these homes take up to two with a fee while others take none at all, so ask about the specific house before you book rather than reading across. Gatherings: if you're planning anything beyond a normal group stay, that needs approval in advance.
Everything here books direct with us. No middlemen, no platform fees, and a local team on the ground in San Diego with support around the clock, which is the part that counts when you've locked yourself out at Torrey Pines with the keys on the kitchen counter.
