Where to Stay in San Diego for a Zoo-and-Wildlife Week

California sea lions resting on the rocks at La Jolla Cove, San Diego, with the Pacific behind them

Four of our San Diego homes have three bedrooms, and all four put you within a short drive of Balboa Park and the zoo inside it: Hot Tub | Outdoor Lounge | Queen Beds | Chef's Kitchen, Vintage Vibes | King Bed | Big Screen | Backyard & Bunks, King Bed | Chef's Kitchen | 2-Car Garage | 1650 Sq Ft, and Golden Hour Overlook | Spa | In-Law Suite | Grill. They sleep seven, nine, seven and eight respectively, and they are genuinely different houses. Which one you want depends less on the zoo than on what else you plan to do with the animals in this city.

Because here is the thing most people booking a "zoo trip" to San Diego discover on day two: the zoo is one of maybe five wildlife days available to you, and they are scattered across the county. The zoo sits in Balboa Park just north of downtown. SeaWorld is out in Mission Bay. The sea lions haul out on the rocks at La Jolla Cove, which is part of a protected underwater reserve, and the Birch Aquarium sits on a bluff above the water nearby. The Safari Park, the zoo's sister park, is a different proposition entirely: it's up in the San Pasqual Valley in Escondido, and you should plan on the better part of an hour each way. So the home you choose is really a question of which of those days you want to be easy.

The four three-bedroom homes, and who each one suits

Start with how many of you there are, because that narrows it fast.

  • Vintage Vibes sleeps nine, more than any other three-bedroom we have in the city. It manages that with four twin bunk beds alongside a king and a queen, which is the arrangement that makes cousins and siblings work. It's a 1960s house with the original design elements left intact and a lot of window, and it sits on a very large lot, so the backyard is the kind children can actually run around in after a day of being told not to touch things.
  • Golden Hour Overlook sleeps eight across a single-level main house plus a private in-law suite behind it with its own entrance. Grandparents, or the teenager who wants a door of their own, or two couples travelling together who'd rather not share a hallway. The backyard has a hot tub, a fire pit with wraparound seating, outdoor dining under overhead heaters, and oversized yard games. One important caveat: there's no central air. We supply a portable unit for the main house and fans for the suite. Most older homes here don't have central air because the climate rarely demands it, but if you're coming from somewhere that treats it as standard, know that going in.
  • Hot Tub | Outdoor Lounge sleeps seven in three queen bedrooms, which is the cleanest adult arrangement of the four: nobody draws the short straw. Its covered patio has dining, a lounge area and a TV out there, plus a gas fire pit and a hot tub. Of the three-bedrooms, this one's listing puts Balboa Park and the zoo closest, under ten minutes, with North Park and Little Italy just a few minutes off.
  • King Bed | Chef's Kitchen | 2-Car Garage is the only townhome of the four, built in 2022, in Golden Hill near downtown, with three and a half bathrooms for seven guests and an attached two-car garage. If your trip involves a rental car and a second car for the grandparents, that garage settles an argument you don't want to have at 9pm in a hillside neighbourhood. Its own listing puts Balboa Park about a mile and a half away and the zoo a couple of miles on.

If the group is bigger than nine

Then stop looking at three bedrooms. The Coastal Casa has four bedrooms, sleeps ten, and is the one I'd point a wildlife-minded family to without hesitating, because of where it sits. Its listing puts Mission Bay Park about five minutes away and SeaWorld about eight, with La Jolla Cove around twelve and the zoo about fifteen. That's a house from which every animal day in this city is a short drive, including the aquarium bluff at La Jolla and the sea lions below it.

It also has a seven-person hot tub under palms, a fenced backyard with fruit trees and an organic garden, half-court basketball and a horseshoe pit, and two living rooms. After a long zoo day, the useful amenity isn't the hot tub. It's the second living room, where the adults can sit without the cartoon on.

Bigger still: Pool & Palmz sleeps twelve across four bedrooms and six beds, with a private pool, a hot tub, a fire pit and outdoor dining for ten. There's a bin of toys in the house, which tells you who stays there.

How to plan the animal days from any of these houses

The zoo is the big one: a hundred acres in Balboa Park with something over four thousand animals and a botanical collection that runs to hundreds of thousands of plants. People underestimate how much walking it involves and how much of the day it eats. Go early, go first, and don't schedule anything serious for the afternoon. Every one of these homes has a kitchen and a washer, which is more relevant than it sounds when you're feeding seven people breakfast at seven in the morning and dealing with a sunscreen-stained shirt by nine.

SeaWorld, out in Mission Bay, is roughly ten to fifteen minutes from the zoo depending on the route and the hour, which means you can stay in one neighbourhood and still do both easily. Don't try to do them on the same day. Nobody has ever enjoyed that.

La Jolla is the free one, and the one that surprises people most. The cove is part of a protected underwater reserve, with hundreds of California sea lions on the rocks and in the water, sometimes swimming alongside kayakers. Surfboards, kayaks, flotation devices, fishing and shell collecting are all prohibited in the cove itself, so this is a swimming, snorkelling and watching place rather than a gear place. Children's Pool Beach is a ten-minute walk along the coast path, past the clifftop park. The Birch Aquarium, the public exploration centre for Scripps at UC San Diego, sits on the bluff above with more than sixty habitats of fish. From downtown it's a short drive, under twenty minutes; from La Jolla Shores it's barely ten.

The Safari Park is the day that needs a decision. It's an 1,800-acre wildlife sanctuary in San Pasqual Valley near Escondido, with thousands more animals than the main zoo, and its own site tells you to allow forty-five minutes to an hour for the drive from the zoo. Treat it as a whole day out and back, not an add-on.

Wildlife that isn't ticketed

If the trip is really about nature rather than exhibits, build a day around Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where the trails run along the bluffs above the Pacific, and a coastal walk somewhere in the afternoon. Both the Coastal Casa listing and Hot Tub | Outdoor Lounge name Torrey Pines in their nearby attractions, at roughly fifteen and twenty-five minutes respectively, which tells you something about the difference between a Mission Bay base and an inner-city one. The Golden Hill townhome's listing flags Cabrillo National Monument out at Point Loma, where there are tide pools below the lighthouse.

What to settle before you book

The decision usually comes down to four things, in this order: how many beds you need, whether anyone needs their own door, whether you're parking two cars, and whether you want the beach-and-SeaWorld side of town or the Balboa Park side.

Beyond that, a few practical notes that apply to all of these homes. Standard check-in is 4pm. We'll try to get you in earlier when the cleaning schedule allows, at an hourly rate before 4, but it has to be confirmed by our team rather than assumed, because the house genuinely isn't ready otherwise. Quiet hours run from 10pm to 8am in every home. Pet policies differ by property and are stated on each listing, so check the one you want rather than the brand. And if you're thinking of a gathering rather than a holiday, several of these homes will consider it with prior approval and a refundable event fee, though the Coastal Casa doesn't host events at all.

We're a local team, not a call centre in another time zone, and someone is reachable around the clock. Book direct with us and tell us which animal days you're planning. If you say "zoo and the aquarium, and my mother-in-law is coming", that's enough for us to tell you which of these four houses to take.
